Educational Opportunities

Evidence-based educational opportunities are offered on the following topics:

Bingocize is an evidence-based program which combines a bingo-like game with exercise and health education. The program has been shown to increase older adults’ functional fitness, health knowledge, and social engagement in a variety of settings. The overall goals of the program are to help older adults; Improve and/or maintain mobility and independence and learn and use health information focused on falls reduction and other health-related behaviors, and socially engage with other older adults. 

The Chronic Disease Self-Management Workshop is an evidence-based program designed to help people with ongoing health problems manage them more effectively. ANyone with a chronic condition such as arthritis, heart disease, asthma, diabetes, or any other on-going health problem should participate. Caregivers or family members who serve as caregivers are welcomed. Topics covered include nutrition, better fitness, goal setting, dealing with difficult emotions, understanding meds, and managing symptoms. 

The Diabetes Self-Management Workshop is an evidence- based program geared towards Type 2 diabetics and/ or prediabetics. Participants will learn how to deal with symptoms of diabetes, hypo/hyperglycemia, stress, depression, exercise, healthy eating, appropriate use of medications, and working with your health care provider. 

The Chronic Pain Self-Management Workshop is an evidence – based program which covers the folowing topics that give techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, isolation, and poor sleep, appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility and endurance, appropriate use of medications, communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals, nutrition, pacing activity and rest, and how to evaluate new treatments. 

Matter of Balance: Many older adults experience a fear of falling. People who develop this fear often limit their activities, which can result in physical weakness, making the risk of falling even greater. A Matter of Balance is an evidence – based program designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults.

Tai Chi for Arthritis is a CDC recognized program. Tai Chi for Arthritis helps people with arthritis or those without to improve balance both mentally and physically and reduce the rate of falls for older adults. Additional benefits include improved relaxation, vitality, posture, and immunity. 

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence – based, early – intervention course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. The training gives you the skills you need to reach out and provide initial help and support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem or experiencing a crisis. Mental Health First Aiders are a vital link, connecting those experiencing a mental health or substance use challenge with appropriate support. 

The Dangers of Opioid Use in Seniors is a presentation that provides education on what opioids are, their uses, and the way these drugs work in an aging body. It explains the differences in “misuse” and “abuse” of these drugs. It covers some of the benefits and risks of opioid use in older adults with regards to health and mental well-being. Resource information on how and where to get help is provided. 

WISE (Wellness Initiative for Senior Education) is an evidence – based health and wellness program targeting older adults. WISE promotes health through education concerning high – risk behaviors in older adults. WISE promotes health through education concerning high-risk behaviors in older adults. The WISE program is designed to help older adults celebrate healthy aging, make healthy lifestyle choices, and avoid substance abuse. WISE provides valuable education to older adults on topics which include health and wellness, medication use and misuse, stress management, depression, and substance abuse. 

Remembering When: A Fire and Fall Prevention Program for Older Adults is a comprehensive program developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The program objective is to explain and review with older adults the 16 fire and fall prevention messages. The overall objective is to help reduce/eliminate the number of injuries/hospitalizations/deaths of older adults in the community from fires and falls.  

Caregiver Workshops

Powerful Tools for Caregivers is an evidence – based program designed to help caregivers maintain personal well-being while providing quality care to their family member. 

Finding Meaning and Hope is an evidence – based program for caregivers dealing with the complexities of ongoing loss associated with caring for someone with dementia or another cognitive impairment. Participants will learn skills to help them stay strong, healthy, resilient, and positive as they navigate their caregiving journey with healing and hope.
